A little about this
I’m honored to share that I was recently interviewed by CanvasRebel Magazine!
In this feature, I open up about my journey as a photographer, what inspires me, the heart behind Life Photography by Melissa, and the mission that continues to drive me forward after 15+ years in business.
Photography has always been about more than images for me — it’s about preserving the fleeting, sacred, emotional moments that tell a family’s story.
I’m so grateful for the opportunity to share a glimpse behind the lens and into my creative journey. Thank you to CanvasRebel for the platform and for celebrating small business owners and artists.
The Face behind Life Photography -
Alright, Melissa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea of photography and what makes you the face behind Life Photography?
Photography wasn’t something I stumbled into casually—it grew out of a deep desire to preserve moments that felt fleeting and sacred. Early on, I was drawn to the emotional weight of photographs: the way a single image could hold love, vulnerability, strength, and legacy all at once. I found myself noticing the small things people often overlook—the curve of a newborn’s fingers, the quiet connection between a mother and her child, the unspoken stories written in family interactions. I wanted to be the person who could pause time for others and give those moments back to them in a tangible way.
When I started my business, the circumstances weren’t glamorous. I was learning as I went, balancing life, family, and the reality of building something from the ground up. There was excitement, but also a healthy amount of fear—fear of failure, fear of not being “good enough,” fear of whether this dream could truly support my family. At the same time, there was a strong inner certainty that this work mattered. Every session confirmed that feeling. Watching clients see their images for the first time—sometimes with tears, sometimes with laughter—made it clear that photography wasn’t just a service; it was an experience and a responsibility.
The logic behind believing I could succeed came from a combination of passion, discipline, and a willingness to treat photography as both an art and a business. I invested heavily in education, mentorship, and professional development, earning industry certifications and continually refining my craft. I understood early on that success wouldn’t come from talent alone—it would come from consistency, client experience, and building trust over time. I approached my business intentionally, focusing on quality over quantity and creating work that felt timeless rather than trendy.
Over the years, that foundation has proven itself. Photographing thousands of newborns, families, and mothers has reaffirmed that this was a worthwhile endeavor—not just because it could succeed financially, but because it creates something lasting. This business grew from a belief that moments matter, stories deserve to be preserved, and that meaningful work, when paired with dedication and professionalism, can become a sustainable and deeply fulfilling career.

Melissa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a maternity, newborn, and family photographer based in Colorado, and the heart of my work has always been rooted in connection and storytelling. I entered the photography industry with a deep respect for the emotional weight images carry, particularly during seasons of life that change quickly—pregnancy, new motherhood, childhood, and family growth. What began as a creative calling has grown into a full-time business built on intention, education, and trust.
My work focuses on creating timeless, heartfelt portraits that celebrate motherhood, new life, and family relationships. I offer a full-service experience that goes far beyond the session itself—from thoughtful planning and guided posing to professional editing, heirloom-quality products, and a client experience designed to feel calm, personal, and supportive. Many of my clients come to me during vulnerable or transitional moments in their lives, and my role is not just to photograph them, but to help them feel seen, confident, and cared for throughout the process.
One of the main problems I solve for my clients is the overwhelm that often comes with being in front of the camera—especially for new or expectant mothers. I bring years of experience working with newborns, children, and families, allowing sessions to feel safe, efficient, and emotionally grounded. Clients don’t have to worry about what to do or how to look; they can trust that every detail has been considered and handled with expertise.
What truly sets my work apart is the balance between artistry and professionalism. I have photographed thousands of newborns and families over the years and have continually invested in my craft through advanced education, earning professional certifications and industry degrees. I approach photography not only as an art form, but as a disciplined business—one built on consistency, ethical practices, and a deep respect for the families who invite me into their lives.
What I am most proud of is longevity. In an industry where many creatives come and go, I’ve built a business that has grown steadily for over a decade while maintaining a high level of quality and care. I’m proud of the trust my clients place in me, the relationships that span years and generations, and the fact that my work becomes part of family legacies.
The most important thing I want potential clients and followers to know is that my brand is built on intention. Every image is created with purpose, every session is approached with empathy, and every client is treated as more than a transaction. My goal is to create photographs that feel as meaningful decades from now as they do the day they are taken—images that tell stories, hold emotion, and stand the test of time.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Looking back, I wish I had understood sooner how valuable community, mentorship, and structured education would be in my creative journey. Early on, I spent a lot of time trying to figure things out on my own, believing that self-teaching and trial-and-error were just part of the process. While that did build resilience, it also slowed my growth in ways I didn’t recognize at the time.
One of the most impactful resources I discovered later was professional organizations and peer communities within the photography industry. Being surrounded by other photographers who were committed to growth, ethical business practices, and continual learning changed everything. Access to critiques, print competitions, conferences, and educational programs helped me see my work more objectively and pushed me to raise my standards in both artistry and professionalism.
I also wish I had invested earlier in business education specific to creative entrepreneurs. Understanding pricing, client experience, systems, and sustainability would have saved me years of stress and uncertainty. Creativity alone doesn’t build a lasting business—learning how to support that creativity with solid business foundations is essential.
Finally, mentorship was something I underestimated early on. Having guidance from those who had already walked the path helped me avoid common pitfalls and gave me clarity and confidence during pivotal moments. If I could go back, I would remind myself that growth doesn’t have to be isolating, and that seeking support is a strength, not a shortcut.
These resources didn’t just make me a better photographer—they made me a better business owner and creative professional, and I’m deeply grateful for the perspective they gave me.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
At the core of my creative journey is a desire to preserve what is often fleeting and easily overlooked. My mission has always been to create photographs that hold meaning—images that honor motherhood, new life, and family connection in a way that feels authentic and lasting. I believe photographs are more than visual records; they are emotional touchstones that help people remember not just how a moment looked, but how it felt.
I’m driven by the responsibility that comes with being invited into some of the most intimate seasons of a person’s life. Whether I’m photographing a newborn, an expectant mother, or a growing family, my goal is to create work that reflects care, respect, and intentionality. I want my clients to feel seen, supported, and confident, and to walk away with images that become part of their family’s story for generations.
Beyond the imagery itself, my mission also includes raising the standard of professionalism within the creative industry. I’m deeply committed to education, ethical business practices, and continual growth—not only for myself, but for the community around me. Through mentorship, leadership, and example, I strive to show that creativity and professionalism are not opposing forces, but complementary ones.
Ultimately, my goal is longevity and impact. I want my work to stand the test of time, both artistically and emotionally. If years from now someone looks at an image I created and feels the same love, connection, and meaning they felt in that moment, then I’ve done what I set out to do.
